3 Weeks To Go!

Less than 3 weeks until our team heads off for Tanzania. As the saying goes: "what's done is done" - from this point on it is all about staying healthy and rested before the big climb. Meanwhile our fundraising total keeps climbing higher and higher. We are at $75,000 and getting close to 80K. Let's go for 100K. What a team!

Article about Kili Climber in Calgary Herald

Read the great article about Cindy Radu, one of team climbing Kilimanjaro! Cindy is from Calgary and has managed not only to raise $11,000 for the Women of Courage program through her fundraising efforts, but has also managed to find a donor in Calgary to fund a new Women of Courage program in Alberta in 2012!

Fundraising Results - final post

It has been almost 3 months since the race. The team has disbanded and is spread across the country/continent busy with our lives - working, adventuring, parenting, learning, teaching, playing...living! The total amount we raised was close to 14K. Most importantly, those funds are going to go directly to supporting 8 special women take part in a Women of Courage program happening at the end of September in Ontario. Without these funds raised, Outward Bound would not have been able to run a second Women of Courage program. Thank You to all of our friends, family and others who supported us through our training, planning, fundraising and throughout the race itself. We couldn't have done it without you, and the Women taking part in the program at the end of September couldn't have taken part in their program without your help. Plans are already under way to register for next year's race - a faster boat, a better finish and more money raised! Stay tuned....

Back in Whitehorse

We have arrived back in Whitehorse and are now all making our way either back home or onto new adventures. We had a great race. We lost cell coverage after Lake Labarge and so unfortunately could not Blog beyond that point. Thanks so much for words of support and congratulations from friends and family. We are really happy with our result - 27th place overall, 2nd place in our category which earned us a small cash prize that will go towards our "cause" - the Outward Bound Women of Courage program. We kept taking pictures so we will post more as they come in. Thanks again for all of the support - we'll be back at it next year!

746 KMs. 8 delirious, sore, exuberant, empowered, insanely strong women. 55 hours and 34 minutes. Seemingly hundreds of cliff bars. No sleep. 1 cause. 27th place overall, 2nd women's Voyageur team. Over 12,000 dollars raised. Thank you, everyone, so much for your support, enthusiasm, faith in us, and dedication to making the lives of women better. Photos and more stories to come!

We look forward to entering an alumni boat next year, Outward Bound Canada 2012!

Safety Briefing

The most important thing to remember is that this IS a wilderness race. There is not much support out there. It will rain and it will be cold...sounds like fun! Here is a picture of the Race president doing the safety briefing. We are getting excited!

Gear check and Official Team Picture

Just went through gear check and we checked out okay! Everyone has to have certain individual items in the boat (pfd, paddle, sleeping bag, emergency bivy sack) plus we need certain group gear (tents, water container, first aid, maps etc.). Its pretty exciting up here as we meet other teams from across the country and around the world. Check out our official team picture and other fun pics.

Change of Mind

We decided to ditch the River Quest and go to Hawaii instead! Just kidding...had to purchase evac insurance from Marlin Travel. Check out pic of Jocelyn, Jo and Richella checking out our options.

Preparing our Paddles

There is no rest for us in the land of the midnight sun. Too much sunlight to sleep - might as well get our super light race paddles ready! Check out Bri, Steph and Perch readying their tools....

All Together at Last!

We finally all made it to Whitehorse! Great to be together as a team for the first time. Most of the team got on the water today to try out the boat and they were flying along. They also saw bald eagles, a grizzly bear, and many other teams (including our competition)! It was a hot and sunny day on the Yukon River today. Sarah arrived mid afternoon and found the rest of the gals and quickly got up to speed. We are now enjoying amazing local fare at the Klondike Rib and Salmon courtesy of Outward Bound - thanks OB! Getting excited to get on the river in two days time. Over and out from the land of the midnight sun.

Yukon River Quest Here We Come!

Welcome to our Yukon River Quest Staff Fundraiser Blog!

What is this event all about? Well, 8 Outward Bound Canada staff are going to be paddling the world famous Yukon River Quest race from Whitehorse to Dawson, 740 kms, from June 29th to July 3rd. Why? First of all to raise funds for Outward Bound Canada's Women of Courage program, - a program for women survivors of violence and/or abuse which we have been running for over 20 years in Canada. Women who take part in this wilderness expedition have the full tuition paid, including all travel expenses and day care if necessary. Our goal as a team is to raise $20,000 to go towards providing full tuition bursaries for women on expeditions in 2011 and 2012. We are half-way there and need your help to raise the next $10,000 so if you would like to donate to this great cause, click here. To find out more about our team and the lead up to this event, visit our Facebook page.

The second reason we are doing this race is because it is going to be an amazingly FUN ADVENTURE and that is what Outward Bound is all about, whether you are a participant on an Outward Bound program or a staff who works for Outward Bound. So...follow us on our journey as we do our final preparations and head up to the Yukon. Check back to this Blog for updates on our adventure......it is sure to be an interesting read!
